Dolphin Academy welcomes Tikal

Dolphin Academy Curaçao is very happy and proud to report that on December 4th the dolphin family was extended with the birth of baby Tikal. Dolphin DeeDee gave birth to her little boy around 6.30 am in the company of the animal care staff. Mother and son are doing well.

Dolphins are mammals and so the little one drinks mother milk, around 15 liters a day! The baby will nurse up till the age of 2, but starting from around 6 months will add some fish to his diet. Now that Tikal has successfully lived through his first month of life, his survival chances increase, although the first year of a baby dolphin remains a challenging time.

Tikal, just like his dad, is named after the Maya ruins in Central America and is the second child of DeeDee and Copan. In 2005 sister Li-Na was born. Copan’s firstborn son on Curaçao is the fifth baby that was welcomed at the Dolphin Academy. Papito, Li-Na, Chabelita and Kayena preceded him.

The focus of the Dolphin Academy staff is and will be to provide the best conditions for Tikal’s growth and development.
